What Is Junk Removal? A Straight Answer for Northern Virginia Homeowners

In northern Virginia, Most people don’t call a junk removal company on a good day.

They call in the middle of a move. Or after a parent passes and the house has to be emptied by the end of the month. Or three weeks into a bathroom renovation, when the old vanity is still sitting in the driveway and the contractor isn’t coming back for it.

So here’s the plain answer to the question.

Junk removal is a service where a crew comes to your property, carries your unwanted items out, loads them onto a truck or trailer, and takes them somewhere they can legally go — a donation center, a recycling facility, or a landfill. You don’t lift anything. You don’t rent anything. You don’t make five trips to the transfer station in a borrowed pickup.

That’s the whole service. What follows is everything people actually want to know before they book it: what it costs, what we can’t take, what happens to your things after we pull away, and the Northern Virginia rules that catch homeowners off guard.

How Junk Removal Differs From the Alternatives

Get rid of this stuff” has three common solutions, and they are not interchangeable.

Junk removal vs. a dumpster rental

A dumpster is a container. It arrives, sits in your driveway for anywhere from three days to two weeks, and you fill it yourself. That means you are still carrying the sleeper sofa up the basement stairs. In much of Northern Virginia there's a second problem: many HOAs restrict how long a container can sit in a driveway or on the street, and some jurisdictions require a permit for street placement. A dumpster makes sense for a long renovation generating debris daily. For a one-day cleanout, it's the expensive way to do your own heavy lifting.

Junk removal vs. hauling it yourself

Renting a truck for a day looks cheap until you add the rental, the fuel, the mileage, the transfer station tipping fees, the surcharges on mattresses and appliances, and the Saturday you spent doing it. Then add the risk: a dropped washing machine takes a chunk out of a stair tread, and a strained back costs more than the whole job would have.

Junk removal vs. curbside bulk pickup

Most Northern Virginia jurisdictions offer some form of bulk or brush collection, and if your situation fits the rules, use it — it's cheaper than we are. The limits are what get people: item caps per pickup, scheduling windows measured in weeks, restrictions on appliances with refrigerant, and no help getting the item from your basement to the curb. Bulk pickup works for one couch and a month of patience. It doesn't work for a full estate.

What Does Junk Removal Cost?

This is the first question almost everyone has, and the industry has a bad habit of dodging it. We’d rather answer.

You are charged for the space your items take up in the trailer. Labor, hauling, and dump fees are included in that number. We divide our 14-foot trailer into eighths and price the job by how many eighths your load fills, from a single 1/8 up to a packed 8/8.

For smaller jobs, we price by the item:

Hot tubs, pianos, pool tables, trampolines, riding mowers, home gyms, and heavy safes are quoted individually, because the work is in the disassembly and the carry-out, not the hauling. Concrete, brick, and dirt are priced by weight.

Whichever way your job is priced, you get one number in writing before we lift anything, and we hold to it.

The fees nobody mentions until the invoice

A few items cost us more to drop off, because the facility charges us a specific fee to accept them. We pass that fee through at cost, with nothing added on top, and we tell you about it before the item goes on the trailer — not after.

Item Added Disposal Fee
Refrigerator, freezer, or AC unit containing refrigerant +$45
Mattress or box spring +$30
TV or electronics +$30
Tires +$20
Propane tank +$15

If a company won’t discuss price until a truck is in your driveway, that’s a choice they made. Ask for the number in writing first, from anyone you call.

What Junk Removal Companies Can't Take

No licensed hauler can take everything, and any company that says otherwise is either uninformed or planning to dump it somewhere it shouldn’t go. Here’s our actual list.

We do not remove:

If you have any of the above, your county is the right call. Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, and Arlington all run household hazardous waste programs with designated drop-off sites and collection days, and they’re free or low-cost for residents. Check your county’s website for current locations and hours before you load anything into your car.

Paint is the one people ask about most. Latex paint dried out completely — lid off, or mixed with kitty litter or a hardener until solid — can usually go in regular household trash. Oil-based paint is hazardous waste and needs the county program. When in doubt, ask us during the estimate and we’ll tell you which pile it belongs in.

Where Does the Junk Actually Go?

A truck pulls away and most people never think about it again. Fair enough. But the answer says a lot about the company you hired.

Everything comes off the trailer sorted, not dumped:

Usable goods are donated

furniture, housewares, working appliances, tools, and clothing go to local charities and community organizations here in Northern Virginia. Whenever possible, usable items stay in the community rather than going into a hole in the ground.

scrap metal in particular has real recycling value and no business in a landfill.

televisions and monitors especially, since older units contain lead and other materials that shouldn’t leach into the ground.

the coolant is recovered by a certified technician before the unit is scrapped. This is federal law, not a preference, and it’s why fridges cost more to remove.

the steel, foam, and fiber can all be separated and reused.

some things genuinely have no second life, and that’s where they belong.

If you want to know where a specific item ended up, ask. We’ll tell you.

What Northern Virginia Homeowners Should Know

A few local realities are worth knowing before you start any cleanout, whether you hire us or not.

Appliances with refrigerant have rules attached

Refrigerators, freezers, window AC units, and dehumidifiers can’t simply be thrown away. The refrigerant has to be recovered by a certified technician first, and facilities will refuse a unit that hasn’t been handled correctly. That’s the reason for the added fee, and the reason your curbside collection may decline the item outright.

Electronics can't go in the household trash

Virginia restricts the disposal of computers, monitors, and televisions in regular municipal waste. Most Northern Virginia counties run e-waste collection events or permanent drop-off sites for residents. If you’re clearing an office or a basement full of old equipment, it’s worth batching it rather than sneaking it into the bin a piece at a time.

Your HOA probably has an opinion

Across Sterling, Ashburn, Reston, and much of the planned-community side of Northern Virginia, HOA covenants commonly limit how long items can sit at the curb, restrict driveway containers, and set rules about when trucks can be on the property. It’s worth a two-minute check before you schedule anything. A same-day removal sidesteps most of these problems entirely, which is often the real reason people choose it.

Transfer station access isn't automatic

County disposal facilities have their own hours, resident permit requirements, load restrictions, and tipping fees that vary by material. If you’re planning to haul it yourself, call ahead and confirm they’ll accept what’s in your truck. People discover the restriction at the gate more often than you’d think.

County programs change their hours, sites, and accepted-item lists periodically. Confirm details with your county before making the trip.

How the Process Works

Four steps, and none of them are complicated.

We’re licensed and insured, family-owned, and based right here in Northern Virginia — Sterling, Ashburn, Reston, Herndon, Leesburg, Centreville, Manassas, Fairfax, Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria, and the surrounding communities. You’ll deal with the owners, not a franchise call center.

Signs It's Time to Call Someone

You probably already know. But a few common ones:

On paper the job is simple — haul it away. In practice it’s rarely just about the stuff. It’s about clearing the space, feeling the relief, and getting to move forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to move anything to the curb first?

No. That’s the service. We remove items from wherever they are — basements, attics, garages, second-floor bedrooms, storage units, backyards. You point, we carry.

It helps for the walkthrough, but it isn’t required. We’ve handled plenty of jobs for out-of-state family members managing a property remotely. We’ll confirm the scope by photo, keep you updated, and send pictures when the job is done.

Often none — same-day and next-day slots are frequently available. Estate cleanouts and full-property jobs are worth booking a few days out so we can bring the right crew and plan for multiple loads.

We come back. Whole-house and estate cleanouts are usually multi-load jobs, and we’ll tell you upfront how many trips it will take and what the total will be.

Yes, and we’d prefer to. Tell us which items you’d like donated and we’ll route them to local charities. If you need a donation receipt for tax purposes, say so ahead of time and we’ll make sure you get one.

We set it aside and call you. It happens more often than you’d expect during estate work — jewelry in a coat pocket, cash in a book, documents in a shoebox. It goes back to the family.

Sometimes, if you’re generating debris over multiple days and don’t mind loading it yourself. For a single cleanout where the work is the carrying, junk removal is usually cheaper once you count the rental, the permit, the tipping fees, and your weekend.
